Clean Water

Unsafe water accounts for up to 75% of child mortality, so the need for clean, safe water in rural villages is critical. However, transporting clean water from the mountains many kilometers away was once impossible.

In 2005 FGC built a system of aquaducts (pipes) and filtration to transport clean water from the Afghan mountains, while training villagers to build and maintain the system. This system has been used as a model, inspiring more than 50 villages to raise their own funds and build their own water systems.

The Need
There are more than 70 villages in the Shahidan Valley, but to date only 20 of them have clean water supplies. Work plans for FGC include providing clean water to some of the remaining 50 villages. FGC endeavours to build one new water system and hydro plant each year.
