Tree Planting

In an effort to heat their homes, Afghan villagers burn bushes cut from the mountains for fuel and heat. Over the years, this has resulted in dwindling vegetation, stripping the already barren, unforgiving landscape even further.

For several years, FGC-supported tree planting projects have planted over 800,000 trees at a rate of 100,000 per year. Stimulated by a sense of ownership and responsibility, villagers are also involved in watering and caring for the trees, which provide alternative fuel for home-heating while at the same time helping to protect the environment.

The Need
Every spring, FGC plants about 100,000 trees in Bamyan province, including in the Band-e-Amir National Park.
