Education

Education has the potential to lift communities above a level of basic survival to thriving ingenuity and self-sufficiency. Prior to programs carried out by FGC and other organizations, the infrastructure of schools and teachers did not exist in the Shahidan valley. Teachers weren’t educated beyond a Grade 6 level and many school buildings were destroyed during the war.

Much of FGC’s work includes training teachers, registering schools and developing methods for fundraising for school buildings. Last year, 70 teachers graduated from Bamyan University, 10 of whom had come from the Shahidan valley. They were assisted in their efforts to enroll at the university by FGC.

The Need
More schools, teachers and student transportation is needed to continue the reach of learning in rural Afghanistan. One school costs about $200,000 and could provide valuable education for thousands of people through daytime classes for children and evening literacy training for adults.
