CultureFuture Generations Canada works with the Afghan people in a spirit of cultural respect. In Afghanistan, efforts are rewarded with feasting and celebration. The completion of all community projects are marked in this way with an FGC-sponsored feast to celebrate the community’s achievement. For us, it is essential that the Afghan people understand they have the capacity, skills, and competence to improve their standard of living. Much headway has been made in this area including the formation of more than 100 shuras (village councils) who actively participate in the development and future of their communities. Many development initiatives, both large and small, provide employment for villagers and stimulate local income generation. They also encourage young men to make positive contributions to their villages rather than becoming members of war-lord militias. Women continue to become active and involved members of the communities – many are employed; others are taking literacy training and even becoming leaders in the shuras. |
