Our Mission

Founded by the Honourable Flora MacDonald and supported by a team of community-based volunteers led by Abdullah Barat, Future Generations Canada focuses on facilitating grassroots development in the areas of health, education, economy, environment and peaceful governance.

The mission and vision of FGC is one of empowerment. FGC does not attempt to solve the Afghan people’s problems with a traditional quick-fix, financial aid model. Instead, FGC encourages villagers to improve themselves – helping them create local systems of governance to ensure a collaborative, egalitarian approach to decision-making. Then, the villagers themselves determine their priorities, from clean water to solar-powered lighting, to trees used for heat and fuel.

Communities are challenged to find ways of executing their plans: raising funds, building schools and aqueducts, seeking training, installing and maintaining solar-lighting building mini hydro power units and water filtration systems. The people develop a sense of ownership, competence and self-sufficiency, while being supported with building supplies, training and education.
